iPeepbxs: 34,400 Impressions, One Spike, and What It Teaches About SEO Reporting

iPeepbxs, a business phone systems site, recorded 446 Google clicks and 34,400 impressions over six months of our 2023 SEO engagement, almost all of the clicks in one spike in late May. An honest case study on how SEO results get misreported, and what a real trend looks like.

iPeepbxs: 34,400 Impressions, One Spike, and What It Teaches About SEO Reporting

iPeepbxs is a business phone systems site: IP PBX systems, the office phone exchanges that run over the internet. Over six months of our 2023 SEO engagement, Search Console recorded 446 clicks and 34,400 impressions, with an average position of 23.

Those numbers, on their own, look like a site gaining ground. The chart shows something else: almost all of the clicks, and a large share of the impressions, arrived in a single spike in late May 2023. Outside that week, the lines are close to flat. We publish it because it is the clearest example we have of how SEO results get misreported, including by agencies that do not mean to mislead.

Google Search Console Performance report for ipeepbxs.com, 11 April to 10 October 2023: 446 clicks, 34,400 impressions, 1.3% average CTR and average position 23, with one spike in late May.
Google Search Console, ipeepbxs.com, 11 April to 10 October 2023: 446 clicks, 34.4K impressions, 1.3% CTR, average position 23. One spike in late May; flat otherwise.

The screenshot was taken in October 2023 with Search Console set to "last 6 months", during the engagement.

The spike. In late May, clicks and impressions shoot up together for a few days and then drop back. The screenshot does not record the cause.

The rest. Before and after the spike, clicks and impressions stay close to the bottom of the chart. The orange average-position line moves around a steady level throughout, with no clear improvement.

A report that said "446 clicks and 34,400 impressions over six months" would be accurate and misleading at the same time. That is the point of this case study.

How SEO Results Get Misreported

Most misleading SEO reports do not contain false numbers. They contain true numbers presented without the context that changes their meaning.

  • Totals without the chart, so a one-week spike reads as six months of progress.
  • No date range, so the result cannot be compared with anything.
  • Rank-tracker screenshots for a hand-picked list of keywords, instead of Google's own data across every search.
  • Impressions presented as traffic, when impressions are only appearances in results.
  • No link to enquiries, so nobody asks whether any of it produced a conversation.

Compare this chart with First Source Inc over exactly the same six months. Both sites had tens of thousands of impressions. First Source's chart is flat for three months and then steps up in July and holds; iPeepbxs's is a single spike. Same kind of total, completely different result. five questions in orderChecking an SEO report

When an SEO report arrives, ask for the Search Console chart and its date range. If the clicks are concentrated in a few days, it is a spike and the total overstates progress. If they hold or rise, check which searches they came from and whether enquiries followed.

What a Business Phone Systems Site Needs to Be Found

This is how we would approach a site in this market. It is the approach in general, not a record of the 2023 work.

Business phone systems are a competitive, research-heavy purchase. Buyers compare providers, read about features such as call routing and voicemail to email, and want to know costs per user. The pages that win are the ones that answer those questions plainly: a page for each system or plan, honest cost information, comparisons with the alternatives, and setup guides. A site with a few product pages competes against providers with hundreds.

Organic Clicks vs Paid Clicks: Pricing the Same Traffic

Assumptions: 446 clicks over six months, priced at LocaliQ's 2026 Business services average of $5.87 a click (US data, updated 1 June 2026). 2026 prices applied to 2023 clicks.

Volume Organic clicks At $5.87 a click
Six months, as recorded 446 about $2,620
Outside the late-May spike a small fraction a small fraction

The honest reading: the value of this window sits almost entirely in one week. A steady result, even at a lower total, would have been worth more.

What This Engagement Confirmed

True numbers can still mislead. The fix is context: the chart, the dates, the source.

Compare shapes, not totals. Two sites with similar six-month totals can have completely different results. Ask for the chart every time. Our nine-site portfolio shows every chart we have, and how long SEO takes explains what a real trend looks like month by month.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if my SEO report is honest?

Ask for the Google Search Console chart with its date range, not just totals. Check whether clicks are spread across the period or concentrated in a few days, which searches they came from, and whether enquiries followed.

What does a spike in Search Console mean?

A short burst of impressions and clicks that falls back afterwards. It usually comes from a single page catching a period of search interest. It is not a trend unless the higher level holds.

Why is the average position 23 if there were 34,400 impressions?

Because the site appeared for many searches on page two or three, and briefly for more during the spike. Impressions count appearances, not visits, and a low average position means few of them led to clicks.

Are impressions the same as traffic?

No. An impression is your page appearing in search results; a click is someone visiting. Reports that present impressions as traffic overstate results.

Why publish a result like this?

Because a results page that only shows the best charts proves nothing. We show every client site we have data for and label the spikes.
