Souvlaki Place is a Greek restaurant on The Queensway in Etobicoke, in Toronto's west end. Over the six months to October 2023, its site ranked at position 1 on Google for "greek food near me", "greek near me" and "food near me", and at or near the top for its own name in every variation people typed. Across 250 ranking queries, it turned 3,820 impressions into 538 clicks: a 14.1% click-through rate, several times the typical rate for a local business site.
This case study is about what restaurant local SEO looks like when it works: a small number of searches, very close to a decision, answered by the right page at the top of the results. Every figure comes from the unedited Search Console screenshot below.
| Metric | Result (April to October 2023) |
|---|---|
| Position for "greek food near me" | 1 |
| Position for "food near me" | 1 |
| Average click-through rate | 14.1% |
| Clicks / impressions | 538 / 3,820 |
| Ranking queries | 250 |
Why "Near Me" Searches Are Worth More Than They Look
Nobody searches "greek food near me" to read about Greek food. They are hungry, nearby, and choosing where to eat in the next hour. A restaurant that ranks first for that search is not winning traffic, it is winning tables.
These searches are also small. Look at the impressions in the table below: 121 for "greek food near me" over six months, 29 for "food near me". That is normal for a single-location restaurant, because Google only shows a local result to people near enough to go. So the measure of success for a restaurant is not big traffic numbers. It is whether you rank first for the handful of searches that matter in your area, and whether people who see you click.

Three groups stand out.
Name searches. "souvlaki place", "souvlaki place queensway" and "souvlaki place etobicoke" bring in most of the clicks. These are people who already know the restaurant and want the menu, the hours or the address. Ranking at the top for your own name sounds obvious, but many restaurants lose these clicks to delivery apps and directories that rank above their own site and take a commission on the order.
Near-me searches. "greek food near me", "greek near me" and "food near me" all at position 1. These are people who did not know the restaurant and chose it from the results. This is where local SEO earns new customers.
Area and cuisine searches. "greek food etobicoke" at position 9.3 and "souvlaki near me" at position 9 sit lower. They show where the next gains were: the same searches, a few places higher.

- Discovery (near me, cuisine, area)29%93
Why the Click-Through Rate Is So High
A 14.1% click-through rate is unusual. Most sites we work with sit between 1% and 5% across all their queries. Two things explain it.
The mix is dominated by name searches. People searching for a restaurant by name click its site at very high rates, and about 70% of the clicks in the top ten came from name searches (224 of 317).
The discovery searches rank first. Position 1 for "greek food near me" turned 121 impressions into 37 clicks, about 31%. A local search answered at the top of the page gets clicked.
The lesson for other restaurants is that a high click-through rate is the reward for two separate jobs: owning your own name in search, and being the first answer for the "near me" search in your neighbourhood.
What Local SEO for a Restaurant Involves
The work behind results like these is mostly on-page and local:
- One clear location, stated everywhere. The street, the neighbourhood and the city on the site, in the page titles and in the Google Business Profile, written the same way each time.
- Pages that answer the hungry person's questions. Menu, hours, address, phone and how to order, easy to find on a phone.
- The neighbourhood's own names. People search "Queensway" and "Etobicoke", not just "Toronto". The query list above shows both.
- Owning the name. A site that loads fast and states the restaurant's name clearly, so it outranks the directories and delivery apps for its own brand.
Restaurant searches split into name searches from people who already know the restaurant, and near-me or cuisine searches from people choosing where to eat. Name searches need the site to outrank directories for its own name; near-me searches need a clear location stated consistently. Both feed the click-through rate.
Organic Clicks vs Paid Clicks: Pricing the Same Traffic
Assumptions: 538 clicks from Search Console over six months, priced at LocaliQ's 2026 Restaurants & Food average of $2.05 a click (US data, updated 1 June 2026). Canadian prices differ, and most of these clicks were name searches a restaurant would rarely buy, so treat it as scale, not a bill.
| Volume | Organic clicks | Same clicks on Google Ads (at $2.05) |
|---|---|---|
| Six months, all queries | 538 | about $1,100 |
| Six months, discovery queries in the top ten only | 93 | about $190 |
That second row is the honest one. Restaurant ad clicks are cheap. The value of ranking first for "greek food near me" is not the ad money saved; it is that the restaurant shows up first, every day, for the search that sends people through the door, without a daily budget deciding whether it appears.
The Competitor Pulse Check
| Factor | ValueStreamAI approach | Delivery app and directory listings |
|---|---|---|
| Who owns the customer | The restaurant, on its own site | The platform, with a commission per order |
| Name searches | Restaurant's own site ranks first | Platforms often outrank the restaurant |
| Near-me searches | Site ranks for the neighbourhood's own terms | Ranking depends on the platform's algorithm |
| Cost per customer | No charge per click | Commission on every order |
What This Engagement Confirmed
Small numbers, big intent. A restaurant will never have the impressions of an online store, and it does not need them. 121 impressions for "greek food near me" at position 1 is a strong result, because those are people deciding where to eat.
Click-through rate tells you what the totals hide. Six months of 538 clicks sounds modest until you see that 14.1% of everyone who saw the site clicked it.
Report honestly on the window. Clicks in this six-month capture were concentrated between April and late June 2023; the full performance chart is in our portfolio case study, alongside eight other client sites. Frequently Asked Questions
How does a restaurant rank for "food near me"?
Google ranks "near me" results mostly on proximity, relevance and prominence. For a restaurant that means a clear, consistent location on the site and the Google Business Profile, pages that match the cuisine people search for, and a site that outranks directories for its own name. Souvlaki Place ranked at position 1 for "food near me", "greek near me" and "greek food near me".
What is a good click-through rate for a restaurant website?
It depends on the mix of searches. Sites dominated by name searches can reach double figures: Souvlaki Place averaged 14.1% across 250 queries. Sites that rank mostly for broad terms on page two will sit nearer 1% to 2%.
Why are a restaurant's search numbers so small?
Because Google shows local results only to people close enough to visit. A single-location restaurant might see a few hundred impressions a month for its main searches. That is normal; what matters is ranking first for them.
Is restaurant SEO worth it if Google Ads clicks are cheap?
Restaurant ad clicks average about $2.05 in LocaliQ's 2026 US benchmarks, so ads are not expensive. SEO is worth it because the restaurant appears at the top every day without a budget deciding whether it shows, and because it keeps name searches on the restaurant's own site instead of a commission-taking platform.
Do you do SEO for restaurants and cafes outside Toronto?
Yes. Our clients include a cafe in Hervey Bay, Queensland, and businesses in Pakistan, North America and Hong Kong. Local SEO works the same way everywhere; the neighbourhood names change.
